Description
This program is an adaptation of Lifeline Canberra's Dealing with People in Difficult Situations course, and has been developed specifically for people working in the Community Sector.
The session provides a thorough exploration of conversation and communication skills, focusing on recognising signs of individuals experiencing gambling harm, from their own or someone else's gambling. Additionally, the program provides practical guidance on effectively referring individuals to appropriate gambling supports, and how to prioritise self-care and self-compassion practices.
​Development of this program has been supported by the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission through funding from the Gambling Harm Prevention and Mitigation Fund.​
Course Topics
This course covers the following topics:
- Communication skills
- Understanding gambling harm
- Self awareness, care and compassion
- Recognising, responding and referring individuals
Key Outcomes
The key outcomes of this course are:
- Enhanced communications skills encompassing attending, reflecting, questioning, connecting and containing
- Boosted levels of confidence in conversations with individuals affected by gambling harm
- Improved ability to identify and address individuals who may be struggling
- Acquired knowledge and skills on how and when to refer individuals to specialised support services and resources
- Self-care and self-reflection practices

The target audience for this course is Workers in the ACT Community and Primary Health Care Sectors, including:
- Frontline services and supports
- Policy and advocacy
- Sector executives

Delivery of this training is funded by the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission through funding from the Gambling Harm Prevention and Mitigation Fund.
